Winston and Sebastian were our first residents. They started their journey in North Carolina as a hoarding case. Living with over 80 pigs and no shelter, they needed help. These two made it to Blackbird May 17th, 2020.
Our ten ladies began their lives on an egg farm in NJ, spending their days and nights in a warehouse with 300,000 other hens. When the warehouse caught fire, these ladies were some of the lucky ones who managed to escape. They joined our home July 21, 2020.
Louie, Leo and Lucas were saved at a livestock auction. They were being sold for slaughter at just six months old. These sweet boys joined our family July 27, 2020.
Dana and Shana spent the first 2 years of their lives at an egg farm in California. They were rescued from a slaughter house 'retirement' as their egg production was slowing down. Shana and Dana made their way across the country to Blackbird via Fuzzybutt Rescue and arrived February 6th 2021.
Pole came to us as a newborn needing to be bottle fed. His mom and sister both passed away so, his human mom decided it was time to rehome him. Fortunately, Polaroid was healthy and happy. Albeit, somewhat needy and noisy! He joined us here at Blackbird April 1st, 2021.
These ladies were rescued from the back room of a local feed store since they did not look healthy. Thankfully we were able to provide them the attention and care needed. The chicks arrived on April 2nd, 2021.
Pump was rescued with the chicks from the same local feed store. She has recovered nicely and is learning to be duck and not a chicken! Pumpernickel also joined us April 2nd, 2021.
These two ladies needed an immediate home and came from the same farm as Polaroid. They are now enjoying life with their little brother and joined us April 28th, 2021.

Camilla was dumped in a cemetery with her mate but unfortunately, her mate was killed by a fox. Thankfully, Camilla was able to be rescued and is now living her life with her new mate, Gonzo. They joined the refuge May 13th, 2021
A closed dairy farm left 4 calves set to be euthanized. Nirvana and the 3 others were rescued by Lancaster Farm Sanctuary. She faired better than the others with only mild pneumonia. After a visit to the animal hospital, she made her way to us on July 8th 2021.
Hercules came to us from a friend who cares for a big herd of goats. Hercules became infected with Meningeal Worm, which causes paralysis and other neurological disorders. He was getting beat up by the rest of the herd and had to be separated, so our friend wanted to find a home with gentler goats. We were more than happy to welcome Hands

He was getting beat up by the rest of the herd and had to be separated, so our friend wanted to find a home with gentler goats. We were more than happy to welcome Handsome Hercules to our family and give him the opportunity to live with a herd of goat friends again. Hercules arrived July 23rd 2021.
Bernie, Josie and Eddie came to us after their previous caretaker could no longer care for them due to age. They have been together their entire lives, and their caretaker did not want them to be separated. They are some of our oldest goats here at Blackbird ranging from 9-14 years old! They joined us September 12th 2021
Dave Grohl, Nova and Kurt Cowbain came to us from a dairy farm in Massachusetts. Male cows are not profitable to the dairy industry because they cannot produce milk so, they are used for veal and slaughtered at 8-16 weeks old. Fortunately, these boys were allowed to be surrendered and will get to live out the rest of their lives here at our sanctuary. The band joined us September 26th 2021.
Focaccia came to us after her previous adopter could not longer care for her. We work with a rescue in Long Island, NY called, “They All Want to Live.” They rescue dumped, domestic ducks who cannot survive in the wild. They reached out asking if we could take Focaccia and of course we said yes! We thought she would be the perfect fit for our other Pekin, Pumpernickel. The two of them have been best friends since they met on October 4th 2021
Daphne came to us after her previous caretaker tried to schedule a euthanasia appointment at the vet. Fortunately, our friend at Road to Refuge wasn’t going to let this happen! She asked if we could take her in, so Daphne and her sassiness joined us here at Blackbird on Dec 12th, 2021.
The fab four came to us from a livestock auction. We first noticed Sonny and Aubie were a bonded pair in the back of the auction house so, we asked one of the workers to separate them for us to make it easier to save them. We first noticed Sonny and Aubie were a bonded pair in the back of the auction house so, we asked one of the workers to separate them for us to make it easier to save them. Then, we noticed Leela and Layla. Layla was a baby and still nursing from her mom, Leela. They were stuck in a pen with about 10 other goats. Layla was so tiny. She was being trampled and could not keep up with mom. Again, we had one of the workers pull both of them but, that’s not where it ended. The farmer was actually trying to separate Leela and Layla even though she was still nursing. Fortunately, we were able to save all four of them! Otherwise, they would have been used for slaughter and breeding. As of December 13th, 2021 Leela, Layla, Sonny and Aubie will get to live the rest of their live as a family here at Blackbird.
General Roo came to us when our hay and fence guy, Frank, contacted us. His daughter had a small rooster who was getting beat up by the rest of the flock and wanted a safe space for him to land. General Roo now has a flock of his own guarding “The Chicks.” He is such a beautiful rooster, and we are happy to have him here at our sanctuary as of December 19th, 2021
These five rescues are very close to our hearts. They started out next door (excluding Betty as she was born at Blackbird) to be used for breeding and eventually slaughtered by our neighbor, who was running an illegal butcher shop. Their plans did not pan out as expected, and the house was for sale. One day, we noticed Phoenix was down so

They started out next door (excluding Betty as she was born at Blackbird) to be used for breeding and eventually slaughtered by our neighbor, who was running an illegal butcher shop. Their plans did not pan out as expected, and the house was for sale. One day, we noticed Phoenix was down so, I called the Listing Agent who is selling the property and asked if I could get her help. She called the owner’s and they agreed to release the entire family to us! They had been completely mistreated for about a year and a half until they arrived here at Blackbird. After spending some time at the hospital, they will only know full bellies, care, respect and love from this point on. They made the move starting February 5th 2022 and baby betty was born February 18th 2022.
Uncle Mike was rescued on May 24th, 2022 from a severe neglect case in New Jersey. He was living outside, on dirt, near bones of his friends who didn’t survive. He was emaciated and had terrible skin. Uncle Mike or Unk as we call him, now spends his days as the older gentleman he is, snuggled under his hay bed, coming to us for scratchies and laying in his mud puddle on a hot day.
Eleanor and Rigby came from the same neglect case on May 24th, 2022. They were living in a dark barn, with no light, standing on three feet of old straw, feces and urine. Rigby was only a week old when we rescued him and born into filth. Fast forward to today, Eleanor and Rigby get to spend their lives together as mother and son with their new goat family.
Belle was found unable to stand at a livestock auction. Usually, when animals cannot stand at a livestock auction, they do not leave auction and are killed. Fortunately, activists were able to rescue Belle and we were asked if we could take her in. We welcomed Belle April 16th, 2022. Weighing only 60lbs, she wasn’t even the size of a Grea

Fortunately, activists were able to rescue Belle and we were asked if we could take her in. We welcomed Belle April 16th, 2022. Weighing only 60lbs, she wasn’t even the size of a Great Dane! She was in and out of the hospital for some time due to lethargy until we discovered Belle was lactose intolerant to her milk replacer. Today, Belle is currently spending time with her goat and pig friends, flourishing and growing until she is big enough to join The Band.
Amelia and Rosa came to us in July when we were asked to come to a local, extreme neglect case. They were living in a dirt field, severely emaciated with parasites, worms and mange. Amelia and Rosa had to spend almost four months in quarantine because of how sick they were. Now, Rosa and Amelia will be introduced to their new pig friends.

Trudi and Ethan came to us on July 30th, 2022 from the same severe neglect case as Amelia and Rosa. They were living in the same dirt field surrounded by bones of their friends and family who didn’t make it. Trudi was extremely emaciated and neither of them had been sheared for the summer.
